ABS and ABN brakes are commonly called ‘safety brakes’ because they will stop a rotating shaft even if power is cut off. They are widely used in automatic hoists, conveyors, cranes, winders and automated storage systems to stop operations there materials are being transported vertically or horizontally.
Other applications include machine tools, especially automatic lathes and vertical lathes, to stop and hold moving parts on the work table.

SMB, SBB, SAB , and SFB brakes are for stopping or holding the load when power is cut off. The braking force is supplied by springs and this type is a highly reliable brake. They are typically used for holding robots, Z axis ball screws, servo motors, and general electric motors.
